For
those following the progress within the Ohio & Erie Canalway in
Cuyahoga County, you might conclude that Ohio Canal Corridor is flush
with funds. Reports of millions for the Towpath Trail construction,
land acquisition at Canal Basin Park, Federal Highweay Funds for the
Canalway Sign Program lead some to falsly conclude that the organization
must get its "cut" of the action.
Truth
is that Ohio Canal Corridor receives nothing from the aforementioned
funding. Our budget is separate from these projects and even though
we work constantly to make them happen, we must raise additional funds
to sustain the organization through grants, special events, and membership.
As
you explore the pages within the web site, you will discover updates
and stories that describe the most productive year in the history
of Ohio Canal Corridor.
The
idea of creating a heritage trail from Cleveland's historic Canal
Basin through the Cuyahoga River Valley linking Cleveland's neighborhoods,
attractions, and parks with a system of connector or branch trails
is, in the words of Daniel Burnham, a "Big Plan." It is
a plan that will deliver major new amenities and "quality of
life" possibilities to Cleveland. It will position our city and
region to compete for a growing segment of tourists -baby-boomers
seeking vacations that allow them to actively explore new places.
Big
Plans need big money. Building a trail through an area marked by a
century of industrial uses carries a BIG price tag Our Congressional
delegation deserves our gratitude for their work in delivering a $6.4
million earmark in the new transportation bill for the Towpath Trail.
Likewise for the recent action by Cleveland City Council that provides
a fund for local match dollars to lever further federal and state
funds.
These
are truly "Team Victories." Many players and partner organization
deserve our thanks. We, at Ohio Canal Corridor, take pride in the
role we played in these efforts; especially our Director who guided
the Steelyard Commons TIF from an idea to a reality.
Just
as we have worked to raise significant funds for the Towpath Trail
($17 million), we ask that you contribute to sustain the organization
that leads this effort: Ohio Canal Corridor. Our continued success
depends on a growing membership base. Please consider this invitation
to join us in building a legacy project for NE Ohio!
